Doha: Qatar lost to Liechtenstein 1-2 in their final preparation match before the Gulf Cup to be held in Kuwait from December 22 to January 5.
In the match played at Al Ahli Stadium on Thursday, Qatar were off to blazing start with Almoez Ali putting them ahead in the 6th minute. Qatar had more chances to increase the lead but could not capitalise on them and Liechtenstein punished the hosts with an equaliser in the 29th minute.
Goalkeeper Saad Al Shib's error gave Dennis Salanovic the chance and the 21-year-old forward made no mistake.
Qatar were by far the better team in terms of possession, chances created and shots on target, but despite being down to 10 men after Ivan Kuntans was sent off, Liechtenstein won a penalty in the added time of the match and Michele Polverino converted it to make it 2-1.
Qatar are placed alongside Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain in Group B of the eight-team Gulf Cup.
