Qatar SC succumb to painful relegation

DOHA: Former champions Qatar Sports Club became the second side to be relegated this season when they settled for a 1-1 draw with Al Wakrah. Mesaimeer were already relegated after a poor debut season in the top flight. Going into their final match of this season’s Qatar Stars League on Friday, Qatar Sports Club needed a win and wanted 12th-placed Kharaitiyat to lose. Though Umm Salal handed Kharaitiyat a 3-2 defeat, Qatar SC could bag only one point. Qatar SC and Kharaitiyat were tied on 27 points, but the latter stayed in the QSL by virtue of better goal difference (-9 against -20). Mouhcine Moutouali put Wakrah ahead in the 53rd minute while Qatar SC equalised two minutes later through Ezequeil Carando. Though Qatar SC made some desperate attempts, they failed to find the target a second time. The tie was important for Wakrah too as they were not mathematically out of relegation. They did a creditable job, especially in defence. Against Kharaitiyat, Umm Salal took a three-goal cushion, thanks to goals from Welinton (14th), Munir El Hamdaoui (44th) and Ismail Mahmoud (62nd). Yahia Kebe struck twice (67th and 89th) forKharaitiyat. Meanwhile, former champions Lekhwiya came from behind to defeat Mesaimeer 2-1. EriveltoSilva put Mesaimeer ahead in the ninth while the cops rallied, thanks to goals from Mohammed Muntari (70th) and Ali Afif (87th). Lekhwiya finished fourth. El Jaish finished second after they played out a 2-2 draw with Al Sadd. Abderrazak Hamdallah opened Jaish’s account in the 12th while Xavi Hernandez equalised in the 56th. Though Baghdad Bounedjgah made it 2-1 for Sadd, Lucas Mendes in the 79th. Jaish increased their tally to 48, one ahead of Sadd. Meanwhile, Al Khor shocked Al Gharafa 1-0. South Korean defender Heo Jae-Won struck the all-important goal in the 81st.
