DOHA: Felix Sanchez will coach Qatar in their last two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Syria and China, details showed on Sunday. Sanchez, who guided Qatar to AFC Asian Cup U-20 title win at the end of 2014, is currently coaching the Olympic squad. Last month, Uruguayan Jorge Fossati resigned his post as coach after Qatar beat Korea 3-2 in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Doha. Fossati, who helped Al Rayyan win the Qatar Stars League in 2015-16 season, was appointed the national team after compatriot Daniel Carreno was sacked following the defeats against Iran in Tehran and Uzbekistan in Doha in the qualifiers. Iran qualified from the group as toppers with 20 points while South Korea (13), Uzbekistan (12) and Syria (nine) will battle out for the second slot. Qatar have seven points from eight matches and will need to win their last two games, but also hope Uzbekistan lose theirs to reach the play-offs for next year’s competition. QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani said on Sunday Sanchez will manage the team in the coming fixtures to be played late next month and early September. A permanent coach will be announced at a later date, QFA President said. He said several names were in contention though he did not reveal any particular individual. The QFA President said Qatar national teams in all age brackets will continue to prepare for a busy season ahead.
