DOHA: It was a disappointing evening for former champions Al Sadd and last year’s semifinalists El Jaish as both failed to make the cut in the main draw of the AFC Champions League, going down to Iran’s Esteghlal and Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor in the tie-breakers on Tuesday. Jaish lost 1-3 at the Lekhwiya Stadium after a goalless 90 minutes and extra-time failed to break the deadlock. Romarinho hit the post while Sardor Rashidov’s left-footed attempt and Majdi Siddiq shot was blocked by goalkeeper Murotjon Zukhurov while Mohamed Methnani was the only one who scored. Dostonbek Khamdamov, Rustamjon Ashurmatov and Eldor Shomurodov netted all their chances for the Uzbeks, who will now meet Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli, Iran’s Zobahan and last year’s runners-up UAE’s Al Ain in Group C. At Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, Sadd’s campaign also came to an abrupt end, going down 3-4 also in the shoot-outs after extra-time proved equally fruitless.
