University League Semi-Finals Set To Take Place This Weekend

DOHA: In an exciting night of semi-final football, four teams will take to Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development’s (QF) Recreation Center this Thursday from 6pm,to kick off the penultimate games of this year’s University League season. The 2014-2015champions, Qatar University, progressed to the semi-finals after winning first place in Group A with a total of nine points. They will play against Group B’s second place team, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ), who have a total of seven points. The second semi-final of the night will kick off at 7pm. Group A’s second place team, Qatar Aeronautical College (QAC), who have four points, will play against Group B’s first place winner, Texas A&M University at Qatar(TAMUQ), who have 12 points. Inaugurated in 2013, this year the competition brings together nine colleges and universities from across the country to take part in the four-month football tournament. The winners of the long-awaited semi-finals will play the third place decider and final on 25thFebruary at 6pm and 7pm, respectively. The semi-finals and final were initially supposed to take place on 28thJanuary and 4th February but were postponed until 18thand 25th February to accommodate Qatar University’s mid-year break. The University League is a joint collaboration between Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Foundation. The League support’s both organisations’ desire to encourage local residents to lead healthier, more active lifestyles. Additionally, QFA entered into a strategic partnership in 2013 with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy to support the University League and encourage greater community participation in football ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
