DOHA: Lekhwiya started their AFC Champions League campaign with a
0-1 defeat against Iran’s Zobahan in Group B on Tuesday.
Mehdi Rajabzadeh scored in the 46th minute at the Lekhwiya Stadium
to give his side three valuable points.
Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr and Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor are the other
sides in the group.
Lekhwiya, who scored an impressive 3-0 win against El Jaish in
their last Qatar Stars League match, found the going tough against
a fast-paced Ahan. The Djamel Belmadi-coached side had to endure
some difficult moments.
The visitors enjoyed the upper hand, with their incisive forays
exposing Lekhwiya’s defence. The Qatari side’s forward line lacked
sharpness, with only attacking midfielder Nam Tae-Hee making
some efforts, but the South Korea international lacked support.
The Iranians, who lost 1-3 to Seongnam FC in the final in 2010, came
close to adding their second in the 66th when striker Kaveh Rezaei’s
free-kick kissed the upright and sailed into the stands.
Lekhwiya will meet Ahan in their next match at Isfahan, Iran, on March 1.
