Amman: HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, in his capacity as Chairman of the Social Responsibility Committee at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Chairman of the Asian Football Development Project (AFDP), hosted on the 15th and 16th of September 2013 a special seminar entitled "AFC-AFDP Corporate Social Responsibility Seminar" to discuss CSR in Asia, with a special focus on West Asian member associations and organisations using football as a platform for social development.
The AFC-AFDP seminar drew on the expertise and experiences of international experts from UEFA, World Vision, UNHCR, Spirit of Soccer, Save the Children, streetfootballworld, One World Futbol and many other NGOs, as well as representatives from the various football associations of West Asia.
Prince Ali referred streetfootballworld philosophy of ‘Football with a Conscience’ saying: "Precisely because football is the most popular sport today, we need to activate what my dear colleague Juergen Griesbeck from streetfootballworld called 'Football with a Conscience', we need to give back to society and it's as simple as that."
"Our partners at PepsiCo fully understand the positive impact of this passionate sport, let's bring more people onboard," he added as the sessions concluded with a set of recommendations focusing on three primary goals:
To develop a CSR Regional Hub (working group) for football in West Asia mandated by the AFC incorporating national and regional football associations, NGOs and foundations, local communities, the media as well as the private and public sector.
To support the implementation of the AFC Child Nutrition Campaign at national and regional level.
To link football to prevention of issues that are of primary concern in the West Asian region.
AFC General Secretary Dato’ Alex Soosay stated that the similar workshop will be travelling across the continent in coming days.
"The workshop in the West is only the first of four workshops that AFC will be organising across Asia. We move to Delhi, India next to reach out to the South and Central Member Associations and hope to also achieve the same positive results from that region.
"The AFC President, Shaikh Salman believes in the empowerment and support of the Member Associations from the Confederation. Here, we are certain these first of its kind workshops will promote the Social Impact of Football across Asia and from the AFC Social Responsibility Department, we will extend ourselves towards building the strength of our Members in this field."
Grenville Hopkinson from World Vision International, AFC’s new social responsibility partner for the AFC Child Nutrition Campaign, said: "AFC’s new strategy for CSR provides a great framework for moving beyond ad hoc charity handouts to thoughtful, contextualized activities that contribute to a higher social development objective over time.
"The nutrition campaign aims to ignite a movement for better nutrition for all Asian children, players and fans. By forming a cross sector consortium the AFC will leverage existing networks, infrastructure and partner strengths to unite people under a common goal – this is the real power of football," he added.
