DOHA: Al Gharafa's Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano has been given
a four-month ban FIFA, the world governing body, over an illegal
international transfer issue.
FIFA said his transfer from UAE side Al Nasr to Qatar Stars League
(QSL) side Al Gharafa was 'illegal' and fined the 33-year-old A$1.87m
(£1.09m).
"FIFA is currently studying the judgment and considering the options,"
a Football Federation Australia (FFA) spokesman was quoted as saying
on Saturday.
"We will do all we can to assist Bresciano and his representatives in
having this issue resolved. The advice from FIFA is that the
suspension doesn't apply to Tuesday night's match against Costa Rica."
The ban will hit Bresciano's hopes of appearing at the 2014 World Cup.
Australia are to play Costa Rica, who have also qualified for Brazil,
in a friendly.
Al Gharafa would appeal FIFA's verdict to the Court of Arbitration for
Sport, the club's general secretary Jassim Al Manosuri was quoted as
saying in news reports.
"This is not a unique case, there are many precedents, we as a club
are not a part of this case," he said in a statement on the club's
website.
"As the player ended his contract with his former club before joining
us, our next step will be filing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration
for Sport."
