Doha: Al Khuraitiyat took another big step towards sealing promotion to the QNB Stars League by battling past Al Shamal 2-0 at the Grand Hamad Stadium on Tuesday in the return of second division action.
In form striker Rashid Teberkanin scored both goals from the penalty spot for the league’s leading outfit on 40 and 50 minutes.
Perhaps understandably given the lengthy break before the match it was not an outstanding performance from the blues, who struggled to match Al Shamal's intensity and, but for some wasteful finishing, could easily have lost.
Minutes after Munir Al Hamdawi missed a great opportunity to open the scoring for Al Khuraitiyat, Rashid Teberkanin converted from the penalty spot to give Yousif Adam’s side the lead. He then repeated the same feat just five minutes after the interval.
Al Shamal had the better of things after conceding the second goal, however Fred Dabenka and Jonathan Silva both shot wide and Al Khuraitiyat held out for a vital win.
In the night's other game, Mesaimeer overturned a half-time deficit for only the second time this to beat Muaither 3-1 and move up to second place in the table.
Mahmoud Hassan scored twice and Ahmed Al Douni netted in between as Mesaimeer claimed their second consecutive victory on the trot.
Mamadou Diawara broke the deadlock for Muaither just 22 minutes inside the match.
Measimeer now have 26 points in second place, seven points behind Al Khiraitiyat who could seal promotion in the next two rounds.
