Doha: Al Markhiya progressed into the semi-finals of the Second Division Cup with a 2-1 victory over Al Shamal in the Group A matchup played at Saud bin Abdulrahman Stadium.
Former Oman international Abdulaziz Al Muqbali opened the scoring for Al Shamal on 57 minutes from the spot. However, this lead was cancelled out just six minutes later when Uche Kalou equalized for Al Markhiya after heading home a low driven cross from the edge of the six-yard box.
Al Sadd loanee Hamza Sanhaji sealed the game in the 90th minute as he converted from the penalty spot.
The victory saw Al Markhiya take second place in Group A behind Al Wakrah and qualify for the semi-finals with their opponents now out of the competition.
In the semi-finals, Al Markhiya will lock horns with Group B leaders Muaither, while Al Wakrah will take on Mesaimeer, both finals will take place on Sunday, January 20.
