Riyadh: Brazilian midfielder Rafinha struck twice early in the second half as Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia returned to winning ways in the AFC Champions League with a 4-3 win over Qatari side Al Rayyan in a see-saw match at the King Fahd International Stadium on Tuesday. In a match that saw the lead change hands several times, the visitors took a 3-2 lead into the interval after a Kalu Uche brace and a delightful curler by Sayaf Mohsin cancelled out goals by Majed Al Marshadi and Ahmed Otafy. But Rafinha made it 3-3 with a deflected shot early in the second half before turning in a cross by Hassan Muath for the winning goal. With the win, the Saudi club moved up to second in Group A, one point behind leaders Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates, who drew 2-2 in Iran with bottom side Esteghlal earlier on Tuesday. Having conceded early in their 3-1 home loss to Al Jazira last week, Al Shabab struck early this time around as Al Marshadi outjumped the Al Rayyan defence to meet Abdullah Al Astaa’s cross from the right with a header that looped into the net after only three minutes. But Al Rayyan got back on level terms in the ninth minute as a low cross from the right found Uche, who eluded the challenge of Sayyaf Al Bishi with a delightful turn before drilling a low shot past goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah. The visitors then went ahead in the 18th minute after Sayaf Mohsin received the ball from Uche on the left flank and spotting Abdullah off his line, curled a delightful shot into the far corner of the net. Al Shabab would restore parity just minute later when Al Astaa laid the ball off on the edge of the box for captain Otafy, who lashed a low shot into the bottom corner. However, Uche would put Al Rayyan ahead at the break when he scored his second of the game and fourth of the tournament, controlling a raking long pass from Lucho Gonzalez on the left of the box before unleashing a low shot past Abdullah. Al Marshadi missed a chance to restore parity before the interval when his chip came back off the crossbar but the hosts did level the score once again three minutes into the second half when Rafinha’s low shot from just outside the box took a crucial deflection off a defender that wrong-footed goalkeeper Oumar Barry. And the Brazilian would secure the three points in the 55th minute when he met the ball on the volley after it had been hooked back to him from the right byline by Muath.
