Doha: QNB Stars League champions Al Sadd kicked off the 2019-20 season by winning the season-opening Sheikh Jassim Cup on Saturday night.
Coached by former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez, Sadd overcame Amir Cup winners Al Duhail 1-0 in the one-off match at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
Ali Asad’s 13th minute strike helped Al Sadd win the tournament that’s touted as the Super Cup in domestic season. It was Sadd’s 70th title overall in all competitions, but the triumph also saw Xavi start his managerial career managerial with a title since he took replaced Jesualdo Fereira end of last season.
“I’m very happy to win my first title with as Al Sadd coach. We worked hard throughout the past few weeks in order to be able to win competitions. This obviously gives us a lot of happiness and also a psychological boost before the QSL and other tournaments,” said Xavi. “We deserve this title and the players deserve to be champions.”
It was a victory that would give Xavi and his boys the much needed confidence before they start QSL campaign on August 21, when they take on Al Wakrah.
But the Spaniard said he wanted to put in a lot of effort before the league. “We are still at the start and have a lot of work to do if we are to win more titles.”
