Al Hassa, Saudi Arabia: El Jaish of Qatar drew level with Iran’s Foolad Khouzestan on points and goal difference at the top of Group B in the AFC Champions League after playing out a goalless stalemate on Wednesday with tournament newcomers Al Fateh of Saudi Arabia. In a game of few chances at Prince Abdullah Bin Jalawi Stadium, it was the visitors who went closes to breaking the deadlock as Jires Kembo-Ekoko saw his effort from distance slam against the woodwork early in the second half. It was the second draw of the competition for both clubs, but while El Jasih are in a handy position to reach the knockout stage after joining Foolad on five points, Al Fateh remained at the bottom of the table with no goals scored and only two points from their first three games. There were precious few chances in a first half largely dominated by physical challenges on both sides. The first real effort on goal arrived on the half hour mark when Al Fateh’s Mohamad Haidar rose high to meet a cross from the right with a downward header that beat goalkeeper Ahmed Sofyan but was cleared off the line by defender Abdurahman Akbar. El Jaish’s best effort of the opening half fell to Nilmar, who brought the ball in from the right flank and accelerated past a couple of challenges before dragging his shot narrowly wide of the far post. Doris Solomo then met Hussain Al Moqahwi’s free-kick with a volley from 10 yards out that was well stopped by Sofyan, although the effort would not have counted as he Solomo had been in an offside position. Sofyan would save his side again just before the interval, stopping another effort by Haidar with his chest. The closest that either side would come to breaking the deadlock was a speculative effort in the 50th minute by Kembo-Ekako, who launched a thunderbolt from 25 yards that had Al Fateh goalkeeper Ali Al Mayadi stranded as it hit the angle of post and crossbar. At the other end, Al Fateh substitute Bader El Khames made a surging run towards the El Jaish box in the 65th minute before unleashing a powerful low shot that went narrowly wide.
