DOHA: Jordan and Lebanon played out a goalless draw in the West Asia Football Federation Championship at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Both teams had several chances to score throughout the game, but neither side could find a winning effort and had to settle for a point each.
This was a good chance to score points for the young Jordanian side, which stifled Lebanon with ease and created the better of the few chances on offer, considering they will now face a strong Kuwait side in their second and last Group C match on the first day of the new year.
With Yemen withdrawing before the start of the tournament, and Jordan and Lebanon tied atop the group standings, the results of the two sides’ matches against Kuwait will decide who advances to the semi-final round.
The second-string Jordan, which is eyeing a maiden WAFF title, finished the more satisfied side.
“The first match always have some pressure and being the first match for both the sides, neither side wanted to lose,” Jordan coach Hossam Hassan said.
Lebanon coach Giuseppe Giannini also sounded reasonably satisfied with the result. He said: “We played a very good match considering that Jordan have quality players. I think the draw was a fair result. We also raised our game during the match. We had a couple of chances… but I am actually happy with the performance of the boys.
