DOHA: Spanish coach Félix Angel, the head coach of Qatar’s national under-20 team, has unveiled the 23-player squad set to compete in the 42nd edition of the AFC U-20 Asian Cup. The tournament, hosted by China, will take place from February 12 to March 1, 2025, and marks Qatar’s 16th appearance in the continental competition.
The squad features a mix of local talent and players gaining experience abroad. Goalkeepers Abubakar Mohamed, Jalal Amir (Calahorra, Spain), and Mohamed Fawzi (Al Ahli) will guard the net, while the outfield players include rising stars such as Ibrahim Al-Hassan, Awab Fadhil, Jassem Al-Hamad, and Ziyad Fadi. The team also boasts international experience with players like Moaz Ibrahim (Calahorra, Spain), Tahsin Mohamed (Coruxo, Spain), and Moamen Mohamed (Cultural Leonesa, Spain).
Qatar’s U-20 team, the 2014 champions, earned their spot in the finals by dominating thier Group in the qualifiers. They secured a perfect nine points with impressive victories over Singapore (3-0), Hong Kong (2-0), and a hard-fought 3-2 win against Jordan. Their strong performance has raised hopes for another deep run in the tournament.
In the group stage, Qatar has been drawn into Group A alongside host nation China, Australia, and Kyrgyzstan. The competition will feature 16 teams, including powerhouses like South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, as well as emerging forces such as Uzbekistan and Iraq. The best second-placed teams from the qualifiers—Yemen, Kyrgyzstan, Australia, Thailand, and Jordan—will also compete, ensuring a high level of competition.
