Doha: Coach Nabil Maaloul hailed his El Jaish team’s professionalism in their 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia club Al Fateh with the Group B victory on Tuesday putting his undefeated side in pole position to qualify for the AFC Champions League knockout stages.
Goals from Brazilian forward Nilmar and second half substitute Rami Fayez were enough to secure all three points against their visitors who remain rooted to the bottom of the group without a win and still yet to score.
And the result also means Maaloul’s side go back on top of Group B ahead of Foolad Khouzestan, who defeated Bunyodkor 1-0 in the day’s earlier game, by virtue of a superior goal difference and with an excellent chance of at least matching last year’s Round of 16 appearance.
“We achieved an important win although the match was hard and we had to fight in order to score two goals. The players played with a big fighting spirit and they followed our instructions very well throughout the match,” said coach Maaloul.
“I can say that we are now close to qualifying for the knockout stage and we will be playing the next match in order to get the full points. We achieved our target and despite missing some key players, we showed a great performance.”
