Al Ahli Sports Club is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious football clubs in Qatar. It was originally established in 1950 under the name Al-Najah Sports Club.
In 1964, the founding committee members were officially licensed to establish a club under that name. Later, in 1972, the Youth Welfare Administration issued a decision to merge several clubs. As a result, the administrations of Al-Najah Club and Al Ahli Club—previously known as the "Youth Team" affiliated with the Ministry of Education—agreed to unite. They chose to retain Al-Najah’s colors, green and white, and adopted the name Al Ahli Sports Club.
The club is based in the Al Hilal area and enjoys a large fan base within Qatari football.
